The process of building and owning a home in the United States is fraught with challenges, for both builders and homebuyers. Builders have to deal with multiple risks - from subcontractor work quality to unpredictable schedules and delays, as well as complicated zoning laws. Homebuyers have to navigate the complications of financing, designing and monitoring the outcome.

Experientia was tasked to design a disruptive homebuilding service for builders and homeowners with the vision of "a better house and a better way to build".

We focused on research and design activities aimed at producing better and more effective means to deliver higher quality housing in the US. Defining what a ‘better home’ and a ‘better experience’ means, leveraging on prefabrication technology. Unlike conventional stick-built housing, prefab is more predictable, more energy efficient, higher quality, and time efficient.

How might we help build better homes?

To understand the needs of home owners and builders, we conducted an in-depth ethnographic research study on the user groups - which includes understanding routines and behaviors related to use of space, attitudes and values towards owning and building a home, prefabrication and sustainability. The objective is to uncover insights which could help craft value propositions of the service offering. Participants also provided feedback to early ideas, which they experienced and interacted with via low fidelity (idea cards) and mid fidelity (UI clickthroughs) prototypes.

Insights were synthesized into broad themes, reframed into design challenges and served as the basis for ideation and design refinement - what are the design opportunities in the homebuilding space?

Personas, user journeys, storyboards and opportunity maps were developed based on the insights. These served to inform the design of the homebuilding platform.

Digital Homebuilding Service platform

Designed for homebuyers and builders, the platform enables builders to collaborate with homebuyers and architects to co-design and customize homes. Thereafter, the platform further supports builders in collaborating with subcontractor crews in managing schedules, budgets and tasks. A digital materials library also aids builders in selecting and procuring materials for building.
